January 21: Public Art

Public art is a way to present art in a way in which the intended audience is struck by the idea in a different way. Installations are often a form of public art. They are frequently placed in places that are unexpected. The environment surrounding the installation is part of the artwork and the artist has taken the time to think of a location where the piece would be most successful. In Cristo's Gates, orange gates draped in cloth were placed in Central Park. This artwork not only caught attention of everyone who passed by, but made them question and think about the piece.
